The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East was established by General Assembly Resolution 302 on 8 December 1949 and began operations on 1 May 1950. Its humanitarian and development services cover five fields: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank including East Jerusalem, and Gaza.
UNRWA delivers basic education, primary health care, relief and social services, protection and microfinance, alongside infrastructure improvement and emergency assistance. It provides services in ten recognised Palestine refugee camps in Jordan and supports Palestine refugees displaced from Syria. Camp administration and policing are responsibilities of the host authorities.
